Surf’s up! A northwest swell is in full force this weekend. Two dozen of the top big- wave surfers in the world voted yesterday for the 7th Mavericks Surf Contest to take place this Saturday, February 13th at 8:00AM PST in Half Moon Bay, California. The legendary swells are expected to be huge. Forecasters predict waves with as much as a 50 foot face!
The surfers will be a half-mile off the coast, so it’s difficult to watch the competition from the nearest beach. If you’re in the area, the best place to soak up the vibe and to watch in awe and dread, will be at AT&T Park located in downtown San Francisco. Live satellite feed of the big-wave action will be shown on a 110′ x 31’ high definition screen above center field and HD flat panel screens throughout the Club Level. Tickets are $20 – $25, food and beverages will be available for purchase. For surf fans unable to attend, have no fear – these riders obviously don’t – live webcasts will be
available on www.maverickssurf.com, www.ustream.tv and FLO TV™ enabled mobile handsets.
Mavericks has postponed the contest two years in a row due to the lack of enormous waves. So the stakes are high for these adrenaline junkies. The prize is $150,000 – the highest ever! It’s going to be big, choppy and quite possibly, a little scary. We wish those who dare good luck!

Modern Collective is a surf movie that follows 6 surfers on a voyage to alter one’s perception of modern day surfing. They choose to ignore perfect point breaks in favor of high performance chunky onshore wedges, giving you a candid look at what a session is really like. Starring Jordy Smith, Dion Agius, Dane Reynolds, Mitch Coleborn, Yadin Nicol, and Dusty Payne. Directed by Kai Neville. This movie was released in November 2009.
Here is an exclusive look at raw footage not seen in the movie curiosity of Surfing Magazine. Watch the guys spend their morning surfing a nasty wedge.

Subtext Gallery and Design Bookstore will be kicking off their new season tonight with a show called ‘Strange Days’ featuring artwork by three talented Los Angeles-based artists Ken Garduno, Tom Haubrick and Eric Davison.
Each artist has a particular style, but shares a common unconventional way of capturing out of the ordinary characters and their unusual situations that explore death, sex, seclusion and imagination, making this an oddly charming show you just can’t miss!
