The Switchfoot BroAm was this weekend… and it was the perfect way to spend a sunny
Saturday in Encinitas. A few of my favorite things, besides the obvious of the Switchfoot set, were: 1) the Jedidiah set-up on the side of the main stage, where they turned two giant panels into
murals right before our very eyes – talk about some talented artists!
2) Tristan Prettyman – the local surfer and singer/songwriter rocked the stage with her pop-folk style 3) the fact that the BroAm is an event that gives back to an awesome local charity, StandUp for Kids, which works with at-risk, homeless, and street kids.
To top it all off, the BroAm “after party” at the Belly Up Tavern on Saturday night may have cracked my top 5 concerts. Opening act Stripes and Lines did exactly what they were supposed to and then some – the crowd was stoked on their energy and style. Fiction Family took the stage casually, and then absolutely brought down the house with their unique sound. The group blends the modern-rock sounds of Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman with the bluegrass-rock of Nickel Creek’s Sean Watkins. For these two, Fiction Family is a creative outlet stemming from a mutual love of music – and that attitude was evident in their performance. As part of the crowd, it felt almost like you were sitting in on a really, really sweet jam sesh between friends (really, really talented friends).
So there’s Jon and Sean, and rounding out Fiction Family talent are Tyler Chester on the bass, Aaron Redfield on the drums, and Sara Watkins on vocals and fiddle. On Saturday, they kept things fresh with guest appearances by Switchfoot band member and Jon’s brother Tim Foreman, Keith Tutt on cello, and pro surfer Rob Machado, among others. At the end of the set, Jon Foreman warned that there would be no encore… unless the crowd could muster up a group rendition of the Beatles’ “Hey Jude”. Needless to say, a “Naaah, nah nah nah-nah nah-nah” chorus quickly rose… so the encore began with Fiction Family’s cover of “Hey Jude”. Bottom line… Fiction Family was REAL fun. And hey, isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be?
