Happening Now… Art of Photography Show in San Diego

photo

Between now and November 1, The Art of Photography Show 2009 will be exhibited in downtown San Diego. The show is a world-class international exhibition featuring a variety of photographic forms — images shot on film, shot digitally, unaltered shots, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, montages, photograms, etc. The show is being held at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery at Horton Plaza.

The show is a collection of photos submitted from people all over the world—with prizes being awarded at the end of the exhibit on November 1. Get down to the Gaslamp Quarter and check these works out!

August is the time to drink fine brews and bet on ponies

What better way to kick off August then by tasting some fine handcrafted cervezas? Tomorrow, August 1, the Del Mar Racetrack is hosting the Craft Microbrew Festival & 94.9 Local Music Showcase—the first ever to boot.

Head over to the infield for frothy suds from over 25 breweries pouring over 50 different brews including many local brewmasters. Beer tastings are $15 for five 7oz. tasters. Beer selections from Ballast, Coronado Brewing, Green Flash, Karl Strauss, Left Coast, Stone, Blue Moon, Killian’s, Leinenkuegel’s and Oggi’s.

While you’re getting sauced, FM 94.9’s Local Music Showcase will feature performances in the Pacific Pavilion from:
Get Back Loretta
The Silent Comedy
Heavy Glow

Plus, there’s going to be free chili samples from the Western Regional Chili Cookoff.

Entrance to the event is free with racetrack Stretch Run Admission of $6.

Invasion!

meanwhile1

It’s hard to ignore the phenomenon that is Comic Con. This weekend in San Diego, diehard comic fans from all over the world have invaded our city to celebrate the latest in comic books, science fiction/fantasy, film and television.

While no one at the S.A.W. office admits to be a comic geek (that I know of), we are all into art here. So we can definitely appreciate the show, “Meanwhile… at the Hall of Justice,” featuring a collection of superhero works from over 50 artists. Each work captures superhero mishaps, showing that even those with superpowers make mistakes too.

Subtext, a gallery in Little Italy, will be hosting the opening reception of the exhibition tonight, July 24, from 6-10 PM. See you there, nerds! Click on the above image for more details.

And they’re off!

Tomorrow marks Del Mar’s biggest day of the year… Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack. People talk about it all year long, get dressed up in their Sunday best, make ridiculous hats… all to see the ponies race for the first time of the season. More than 40,000 race fans are expected to attend, decked out in their finest and betting to win. There’s also the traditional "One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest,” where women compete to see whose hat is the most creative.

What’s even more rad than watching horse races behind the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean is that the Racetrack has their legendary concert series throughout the season. Each Friday at 3 o’clock, races commence followed by a concert. Check out the schedule below…

We went to the Coldplay concert at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre last night, and it was amazing, magical, bone-chilling, you get the idea. The band ran from the main stage into the lawn and performed MJ’s Billie Jean only 10 feet away from us. So rad. They gave us free CD’s too—we love free stuff!!!
